Open a Cannabis Business

If you are interested in opening a cannabis business in the Town of Newton, there are a few things you need to know.

On June 28, 2021, the Town of Newton adopted Ordinance 2021-12 regulating the cultivation, processing, sales, and distribution of legal cannabis within the Town of Newton. The ordinance conditionally permits cannabis retail, delivery, cultivation, manufacturing, wholesale, and distribution service within certain zones of the Town. An additional ordinance, Ordinance 2021-13, was adopted on July 12, 2021, providing further guidance on Town requirements.

The Town of Newton also requires a Cannabis License Application and fee to be submitted to the Town annually. 

HOW TO GET STARTED:

Step 1: Thoroughly review the applicable Ordinances and Cannabis License application to understand all requirements and/or limitations.
Step 2: Location, Location, Location (find one!) - the Zoning Map is a helpful reference.
Step 3: Contact the Planning Board Secretary, Kerry Brown, at kbrown@newtontownhall.com and get started on the Planning Board Application process.
Step 4: Fill out the Cannabis License Application and submit it with the fee to the Town.
Step 5: Once the Planning Board application has been approved, and the Cannabis License Application has been submitted with the fee, the Town Manager will begin his review process with the appropriate Town professionals. After a successful review, the resolution of support will be generated and approved.
