Please be advised that the
hydrant flushing program for all fire hydrants on the Town of Newton
water system will begin on Saturday September 24, 2011 and run through
Friday, September 30, 2011. The flushing for the water customers in
Sparta and Andover will be conducted on Saturday, September 24, 2011
between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The flushing for the water
customers in Newton will be conducted from Sunday, September 25, 2011
through Friday, September 30, 2011 between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and
6:00 a.m.
The flushing schedule will be interrupted only for
inclement weather or emergency utility work. We apologize for any
inconvenience that may be caused by the flushing operations. During
the above dates, water customers may experience low water pressure or
discolored water. These conditions result from the dislodging of
materials in the water distribution mains. The discoloration of the
water is not harmful and will disappear shortly. However, it is
strongly recommended that water customers refrain from laundering
clothing while the water is discolored. Washing clothes with discolored
water, which is caused by iron, may result in permanent stains on some
fabrics. Flushing of all fire hydrants in the water system is a
regular operation of the Newton Water Department, which is generally
repeated twice each year during the spring and fall seasons to prevent a
heavy build-up of iron in the distribution lines.
