October 29, 2012 - HURRICANE SANDY EDITION

Newton continues to experience high winds and moderate rains as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Current weather forecast: Hurricane Sandy is currently making landfall in southern New Jersey. Sustained winds are not expected to begin to subside after midnight.

Emergency responses have been mainly compromised of wires down and subsequent alarm activations.  No major flooding has been experienced.

Light pole down at the intersection of Rt. 206, Trinity Street & Mill Street but the road is still passage.

15:45pm
Large pine tree uprooted near Halsted Middle School.  Use caution.

Several road closures to report:
Mill Street - down to one lane
Plainfield Avenue/Carriage Lane - complete closure

All residents and visitors are urged to stay off the roadways (local, county, and state) so that essential personnel are able to perform their duties without incident.

It is currently anticipated that the storm will be picking up, both in terms of rainfall quantity and wind gusts, in the next hour.  Updated as conditions warrant.
