TOWN OF NEWTON FLAGS TO BE FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR OF FORMER MAYOR THEA UNHOCH

With a heavy heart, the Town of Newton sadly announces, Theodolinda “Thea” Unhoch, former Town of Newton employee, volunteer, and Council member, passed away January 12, 2021.

In 1982, Thea became a Town of Newton Employee working as Zoning Officer, Land Use Administrator for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment, Assistant Code Enforcement Officer, and Fair Housing Officer.  During her tenure with the Town of Newton, Thea administered a Balanced Housing and Neighborhood Preservation Grant.  She was also instrumental in implementing the snow shoveling program for the senior citizens in Town through the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department.

Upon her retirement from Newton, Thea was elected to the Newton Town Council and served from July 1, 1998 through June 30, 2010.  During her tenure on the Town Council some of her accomplishments were: serving as mayor for two terms; keeping County Government in downtown Newton; establishing an Economic Development Advisory Commission; supporting the purchase of several fire apparatus; and involvement with the vision plan and redevelopment plans for the Town.

Thea served as a member of the Utility Advisory Board for the Town for many years. Upon her retirement from the Town Council, Thea was an active member of Newton’s Prime Time Senior group and served as both president and 1st vice president.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, with our deepest sympathies.

For her long dedicated service to the Town of Newton, flags will be flown at half-staff beginning today until Tuesday, January 19, 2021.
