Welcome to Newton - Parking in Newton

We welcome your patronage. Whether you are shopping in one or more of our retail stores, patronizing one of our fine restaurants or working in town we designed this brochure to assist you in locating the best parking area to suit your needs.

The Town of Newton offers 5 long-term parking lots. 1 short-term parking lot and a variety of long and short term parking at street meter locations.

For shopping convenience we are pleased to announce that FREE PARKING is available on Spring Street from Main Street to Union Place. The free parking spaces have a 2-hour maximum time limit. The Adams Street Parking Plaza offers convenient pay to park spaces with a 2-hour maximum time limit in the center of the business district.

Parking Enforcement Hours

Parking regulations are enforced Monday-Saturday 8:00am - 6:00pm.

Sundays and Holidays are free.

What do I do if I encounter a meter that is not working?

Should you encounter a problem with a parking meter or lot ticket vending machine please call the Newton Police at (973)-383-2525. Please provide the meters location and the specific problem that you encountered.

What are my options for long term parking?

If you wish to park all day in one of our parking lots we offer the convenience of a parking plaza pass. The pass eliminates the need to purchase a ticket at the vending machine each time you park. Passes can be purchased at the Newton Municipal Building 39 Trinity Street weekdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Finance office located on the first floor.

  • The cost for a monthly pass is $25.00 * plus applicable sales tax
  • The cost for a quarterly pass is $75.00 * plus applicable sales tax
  • The cost for an annual pass is $269.00 * plus applicable sales tax
  • Parking Plaza Passes are only accepted in the following areas:
    • Central Plaza Lot-On Trinity Street across from the Municipal Building.
    • Eastern Plaza Lot- On Union Place across from the Newton Theater.
    • Western Plaza Lot- On Trinity Street at the rear of the Cochran Plaza office complex.
  • PLAZA PASSES ARE NOT ACCEPTED IN THE ADAMS STREET PARKING PLAZA, THE MAIN STREET PARKING PLAZA OR AT ANY METERED SPACE.
  • Free long-term parking is available at the Commuter Park and Ride located on South Park Drive behind the Recycling Center.

Long term parking is available in the following areas:

  • Central Plaza Lot- On Trinity Street across from the Municipal building. 1-½ hours per quarter.
  • Eastern Plaza Lot- On Union Place across from the Newton Theater. 1-½ hours per quarter.
  • Western Plaza Lot- On Trinity Street to the rear of the Cochran Plaza office complex. 1-½ hours per quarter.
  • Theater Lot- Alongside the Newton Theater. 1-½ hours per quarter.
  • Main Street Plaza Lot- On Main Street across from McGuire Chevrolet. 1 hour per quarter, metered spaces.
  • Trinity Street - Across from Municipal Building and in front of Sussex Bank, 1 hour per quarter, metered spaces.
  • Jefferson Street - 1-hour per quarter metered spaces.
  • Spring Street by the county park - except the first 3 meters in from Main Street they are reserved for short term parking. - 1-hour per quarter metered spaces.
  • Upper Main Street from the upper driveway of McGuires to Halsted Street. - 1-hour per quarter metered spaces.
  • All long-term parking areas have a 10-hour maximum time limit. These areas may also be used for short-term parking.

ALL PARKING LOT PAY TO PARK VENDING MACHINES AND ALL PARKING METERS ACCEPT QUARTERS ONLY.

What are my options for short term parking?

Short-term parking is available throughout the downtown business district. All short-term parking areas have a 2-hour maximum time limit. Short term parking spaces can be found on:

  • Moran Street
  • Trinity Street
  • Lower Spring Street
  • Main Street - 2-hour meters are from Spring Street to the upper McGuires driveway
  • Spring Street by the County Park
  • Park Place
  • Adams Street Plaza- pay to park ticket vending machine centrally located in the lot.
  • Church Street
  • Main Street from Spring Street to the upper driveway of McGuires
  • Spring Street by the county park-only the first 3 meters.
What if i want to park in a municipal lot overnight?

Overnight parking is permitted provided you purchase an overnight parking pass and the vehicle is parked in a designated overnight space as marked with an overnight parking sign.

Overnight parking areas are marked in the Central Plaza Lot and the Adams Street lot. Overnight parking is for Town of Newton residents only. Passes can be purchased at the Newton Municipal Building Finance Office, 39 Trinity Street weekdays from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. The cost is $15.00 per month. Overnight spaces are limited. Overnight parking passes are available for the commuter park and ride at no cost and can be obtained through the Town Managers Office,39 Trinity Street, 2nd floor, weekdays from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

ALL PAY TO PARK SLIPS, PARKING PASSES, AND OVERNIGHT PARKING PASSES MUST BE CLEARLY DISPLAYED ON THE VEHICLES DASHBOARD SO THAT THE PRINTED INFORMATION IS VISIBLE TO THE ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.

Tractor Trailer Parking in Newton

Persons wishing to park a tractor-trailer may obtain a permit to park only in the designated area located on Lower Spring Street. The permit fee is $25.00 per month. This area is for tractor-trailer parking only. Permits can be purchased through the Town Managers Office, 39 Trinity Street, 2nd floor, weekdays from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Loading Zones

There are 4 loading zones in the downtown area. Spring Street has 2 loading zones. The loading zones are marked with yellow signs and the roadway is painted in yellow. Spring Street loading zones have a 20 minute time limit for loading and unloading. The loading zones are enforced Monday through friday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. These areas can be used as a regular parking area with a 2-hour limit all other times.

Adams Street loading zone is for loading and unloading only and it may not be used as a parking space. Tractor Trailers are not permitted in this loading zone.

Trinity Street loading zone is for loading and unloading only and it may not be used as a parking space. Tractor Trailers are permitted in this loading zone.

LOADING ZONES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

2008 Final and 2009 Preliminary Tax Bills were mailed on Wednesday, July 23, 2008.
The 3rd quarter 2008 (8/1/2008) must be received by August 19, 2008. After which, it will be deemed delinquent with interest accruing from August 1, 2008.
